LSU Science Cafe - Dissertation Haiku Poetry Slam

  • Schlittz & Giggles 2355 Ferndale Avenue Baton Rouge, LA, 70808 United States (map)

Dissertation Haiku LSU graduate students and faculty will distill an account of their final research projects into the form of vivid haiku to be delivered at this special end of the year LSU Science Café poetry slam. The haiku, a sparse Japanese poetic form, conveys extensive information swiftly, clearly and memorably. Think of the poem as the first version of a jump drive: a means of storing and transferring complicated ideas and images. Being able to communicate concisely and effectively in today's Age of Information is a crucial skill, and there's no better (or more fun) way to hone that skill than working with poetry. Graduate students from various disciplines will recite their haikus and compete for research travel grants provided by the Office of Research & Economic Development. Come celebrate the science of communication and the art of poetry with LSU's McElveen Professor in English Laura Mullen, who will be hosting this special event. As always, doors open at 5 p.m. for free food and networking, and the talk will start at 6 p.m. Remember, people of all ages are welcome, so please spread the word and join us for a fun and informative night!
